Chimney Tuckpointing and Cap Replacement in Chalfont, PA — Full Four-Face Repointing
The chimney on this Chalfont split-level had not received any maintenance since the home was built in the early 1970s. By the time we performed the initial inspection, mortar joint erosion on the north face measured up to 3/4-inch depth across the majority of the joints — effectively open channels that funneled water directly into the masonry during every rain event. The chimney cap had cracked across its full width, eliminating the primary water barrier and allowing pooling directly on the exposed crown mortar.
The tuckpointing scope covered all four chimney faces from the roofline to the top course, with ground-out joints cleaned to a minimum 3/4-inch depth to ensure proper mortar adhesion. We used Type S mortar — the standard for above-grade exterior masonry in Pennsylvania’s climate — color-matched to the aged brick as closely as possible. The failed cap was removed entirely and replaced with a stainless steel multi-flue cap with a 5-inch overhang on all sides, providing the weathering protection that the original mortar wash cap never could.
After the mortar cured, the entire chimney exterior was treated with a penetrating masonry sealer that allows the brick to breathe while blocking water absorption at the surface. The combination of repointed joints, proper cap, and sealer application gives this chimney 15–20 years of protection against Pennsylvania’s freeze-thaw cycling before any additional maintenance is needed.
